Do you need to analyse sequence data? Annotators from the Pathogen Genomics Group at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute aim to give a firm grounding in the latest genome analysis software Artemis and ACT (Artemis Comparison Tool). These genomics tools, developed at the Sanger Institute Pathogen Genomics Group, enable the presentation, analysis and comparison of the immense quantity of currently available genome data in a human-interpretable form. The workshop, led by Sanger staff, is a mixture of talks, demonstrations and hands-on practice.
Artemis and ACT are freely available for Linux/UNIX, Macintosh and Windows and you can download and install a copy from the Sanger web site. During the course, participants will investigate the software running on UNIX workstations. However, as Artemis and ACT both have sophisticated graphical user interfaces, no knowledge of UNIX is required to participate in this course. Exercises during the course will show the use of the software to annotate pathogen genomes, however the experience should still be relevant to those working with other organisms. If you need any advice after the course feel free to contact the course tutors or School bioinformatics support.
Those eligible for an account on the Cambridge University Bioinformatics server please note that this server offers artemis, ACT and a range of associated software such as blast and fasta so you can, for example, use artemis to initiate blast searches and view the results.
None of our current courses requires you to bring your own computer. However, if you want to bring a laptop and have it online we can arrange access via the University Lapwing wireless service.
